# Using the documentation layout

The documentation layout shows your help center like a docs site: a menu of
categories and articles on the side, and the article on the right. This article
explains how it behaves for your readers.


NAVIGATION



 * The home page opens your first article.

 * Clicking a category opens the first article in that category.

 * Readers move between articles using the side menu.


SEARCH



Readers can open search from the search icon in the header, or press ⌘K on Mac
or Ctrl+K on Windows. Pressing the shortcut again closes search.




DARK MODE



A toggle in the header switches between light and dark mode. It doesn't follow
the reader's system setting automatically.



Note



The widget always uses the classic layout, even when your help center uses the
documentation layout.
